A story of purpose & trusting in the Lord's calling.
Joanna remembers the feeling of growing up and questioning who she was and what her purpose was in life. From a young age, she struggled with finding her place, finding her niche, and trusting in her purpose. In high school, she remembers feeling alone and completely confused amongst a sea of people and a life of uncertainty. As she looks back, she sees how the lies of "not being good enough" began to be sown in her life. As most people do, Joanna remembers growing out of those insecurities, gaining friends, going to college, and beginning to see how God was preparing her for what was ahead. As she experienced these life changes, she remembers hearing the Lord say, "I have a plan for you. You're going to have a platform one day." Unaware of what this meant, the Lord was purposefully preparing Joanna's heart for her place and calling in her life.
A couple years after college, Joanna met her now husband, Chip Gaines. He knew these incredible ideas and businesses Joanna dreamed of, and he knew there was fear within her pushing her back from following these dreams. Chip encouraged Joanna to step out and make one of those dreams happen. Joanna and Chip opened Magnolia Market together. At this time, Joanna was pregnant with their second child and knew God was calling her to stay at home and be with her babies. On their last day closing the shop, Joanna felt like her dreams were crushed – as if the journey had come to an end. But God had a bigger purpose for Joanna – bigger than she could truly grasp. He reminded her of the plans He had for Magnolia, which were bigger than she could imagine. She felt a true peace in trusting His sovereignty and calling for her life.
A few years ago, Joanna & Chip received a call from a production company to film a quick video of their family and what their business was all about. This unexpected call turned into their HGTV series Fixer Upper. Looking back, they can't believe how God took so many points in their life and turned it into something greater than they had hoped and dreamed. At one point, they were traveling through Arizona and Chip dropped of Joanna in a garden to just pray, be with the Lord, and ask God what this next year would look like. It was in that garden, under a tree, when God said, "It's time. It's time to open your store again." With hesitation, she felt like this was something she couldn't do. But God, in His love and strength, asked Joanna to trust Him again with her calling. In a leap of faith and complete obedience in Christ, she listened and followed. After reopening Magnolia Market, Joanna can say in confidence, "God, Your promise that you spoke years ago, I'm now seeing. I trusted You with my dream and you've taken it far beyond what I could have ever dreamed or imagined."
Joanna experienced the intimidation, the fear, and the uncertainty of her dreams. But as she the Enemy told her, 'You will fail,' she trusted in God's calling. She trusted in His plan. She trusted in His voice. Joanna followed in obedience in God's timing of waiting and timing of going, all to find something so much greater than she could have ever done on her own. It's in this trusting she learned how God is faithful to us and gives purpose to our desires and dreams, as long as we are obedient in Him. Through their series of Fixer Upper, Joanna, Chip, and their family are able to use this platform to share the Glory of God and the beauty of Christ.
